The ‘Trans Tayside Challenge’.

The ‘Trans Tayside Challenge’.

‘Commando 999′, incorporates former Royal Marines who are now either serving or retired members of the Police, Fire or Ambulance Service from anywhere in the UK. We have in excess of 1000 members already. Our website can be found at www.commando999.com

Several large fundraising events are scheduled to take place over the next few years and all money raised will go straight to the Royal Marines Association (Charity No 206003) and then into the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund that looks after the Corps Family from cradle to grave. We are attempting to raise £1 million for the Corps by 2014 (the Royal Marines 350th Birthday). The current fund is now hugely reduced due to the much higher than average spending in support of the last two operational tours of Afghanistan (Iraq prior to that), with further spending expected following the deployment of 3 Commando Brigade to Afghanistan this year.

A group of former Royal Marines now serving primarily in Tayside Police and Tayside Fire and Rescue have come together to do something locally for Commando 999.

On 21 May 2011, they will set off as individuals and teams from the western shores of Loch Tay, paddle canoes the length of the Loch and continue along the River Tay to Aberfeldy a distance of 22 miles.

They will exchange boats for bikes and set off for Arbroath, cycling the 62 miles past Police and Fire Headquarters in Dundee as well as RM Condor. Once in Arbroath, the route takes them on foot, running a 10 mile cliff top path to Lunan Bay. To cap the hundred mile route, the whole team will come together to Speed March the final six miles to Montrose and the sea.

For more information on how you can support the challenge contact former Royal Marines Officer and now Tayside Police Chief Inspector Conrad Trickett at transtaysidechallenge@hotmail.co.uk If you want to sponsor us visit www.bmycharity.com/transtaysidechallenge

The Northern Challenge – BEN NEVIS TO THE MEMORIAL

The Northern Challenge – BEN NEVIS TO THE MEMORIAL

“No worries mate, I’ll do something up here instead” was my promise to Adrian Gurney and Mark Scoular, as I reluctantly pulled out of the Plymouth speed-march at the last minute. A bold statement at the time having no idea what my challenge would eventually be. I am certainly not the steely eyed dealer of death that I used to think I was back in the day……I haven’t continued my ‘phys’ to any great degree, I don’t do marathons (except the peanut flavoured ones), I can’t swim the channel and the thought of sitting on a saddle the size of a razor blade, in order to cycle from John O’ Groats to Lands End, brings me out in a cold sweat.
